So long, have some codes on my way out.

September 1st, 2009

It is getting harder and harder to come up with the motivation to post- let alone post something constructive.  And what little reward I was working to achieve has fallen by the way-side, as it probably should.  So there’s nothing more for me to do than to whine and then give out some codes.

In general, I enjoy WAR.  I am, and always will be fascinated by the lore developed by Games Workshop (NOT the books inspired by the game, god no.)  But as far as the actual game; WAR lacks diversity.  And I am not talking about sprite racial hue (although Altdorf is sorta homogenized, if you know what I mean…).  RvR is not about skill or about tactic… it is about swarming the enemy while having enough time to focus on heated regional chat drama.

The live event is no more than grind this and grind that.  OR better yet, chase the shiny deer for 10 minutes and get nothing in return.

I’m subbed through Novemberish… and who knows if I will resubmit.  Lord knows I want my 2 year jubilee cloak.

I will likely drift from MMO to MMO, searching for a game that can balance creativity with coding.

It doesn’t help that WAR is constantly hemoraging subscribers for the most mundane issues.  And as more and more of the people I know quit the game, there is nothing left for me to do.

But before I go… I have 10 codes I picked up from Games Day Chicago for Snorri Spikes/White Dwarf Beard/Mummy Wrap.

So, post your fairwells (all 5 of my readers) and of course, if you can make me chuckle, I’ll give you a code.  If you can’t make me chuckle… I’ll tar and feather you.

Guild Experience… eh?

August 31st, 2009

My guild has been claiming plenty of keeps since the patch fixing the gold bags and showing guild experience.

So far I have only earned 1k experience for my guild from two zone dominations (500 each).  We have had several keeps defended successfully from the tides of tainted Destruction… and not seen an ounce of xp for it.

What is an ounce of xp anyway?

Eitherway, aside from putting your name up on the map, and a practically worthless bonus for xp… why bother?  Fortress buffer zones (Caledor/Black Crag/Chaos Wastes) give a beautiful conqueror bag if the fort is taken, but none of the other zones do.

Again, why bother taking a keep?  What exactly am I paying for with the 2+ gold every so often?

WAR inspired Thunderers! Part 1.

August 27th, 2009

By Tyrhoor

As I once promised, this blog would look at the bridge between the Table Top which inspired the game, and the Game- which inspires me to play the table top.   Recently, I have been inspired to keep an engineer firmly planted in T3 on Dark Crag so I can take part in scenarios while T4 scenarios are locked.  I have been highly enjoying my Engineer, so I dug out a squad of Thunderers to paint up.

I am not much for merchant dyes.  They are boring, and often you cycle your gear out it is not worth the hassle.  But while trying to figure the best paint scheme for my Thunderers, I turned to the Merchant.  Of course I have a theme for my Dwarf Throng- but it is not your usual Clan theme.  Inspired by the war-torn times of WAR, my Dwarf Army represents a collection of Clans under one common standard: BEER.

So, many of my squads are combined of 2-3 Clan members, hodgepodged into a military unit- which often happens after the fall of a mountain fortress.  The models have an Ultramarine Blue tunic to tie them all together as one army.  So I sat down and had some fun with the dye merchant.  While the dye system is no match for the selection/customization of a paint brush, this is just to get the energies flowing.

Here are some screenshots from the dye merchant:

While some of these color schemes are more appropriate for WAR (the neon safety yellow/orange/purple looks)- they would probably end up looking very tacky and un-dwarf-like.  But some of them would go quite well for a champion, I doubt just any Engineer would dress himself in all white- but a fastidious champion might.  The bi-color schemes look best for table top display.  Unfortunately I could not change the piping on their gear, which is one of the primary spots I paint on my models.

And of course, there’s always the Squig Herder look- just run your model over with your car and take a lighter to a few places and vwa-la!  Perfectly formed greenskin- then just dunk in green paint and bury in garden for 1 week.

Third to last you can see my damn fine guild’s heraldry, which I will be attempting to use as inspiration for my table top’s standard.  If there is anything Dwarfs will fight for, it is beer damn it!  BEER!

Second to last, what Anvils looks like after most scenarios.

And finally- hey!  Damn it… the squig ate my model.

I am putting some of the final touches on my squad of thunderers, and I will post the squad soon.  I’ll also show some of the clans in their “drinking groups”- rather than battle formation.  Because hey… dwarfs love BEER! … and if it weren’t 10:30AM, so would I.

Jibe ho! #$%^&!!

August 25th, 2009

In an effort to fill my unemployed days with something better than WAR (gasp!)… I have picked up the crazy notion to learn how to sail.

Now… being 6′3″ on a 6′ dinghy is not the bestest of plans- by any means.  Nor is jibing across erratic winds while not wearing a helmet.  I now know why sailors curse so much.

So… I’m going to be taking it easy while I figure out a few things… like “Who am I?” “Who the hell are you?” and “What does this taunt button do?”

On the agenda is my post about painting models… so look for that next in my wild and whacky adventures here on WAAAGHRoots.

Entomophobia.

August 23rd, 2009

Word of the patch: Entomophobia.  Fear of bugs or insects.

With all of these shadow patches we keep getting - I really want Mythic to say what they are patching.  Even if it’s a simple stability patch.  TELL US!  Don’t put anything up on the patcher that isn’t announced, especially now.

The community wants to know what happening, if there are no announcements on the patcher, we assume you’re not doing anything.  And that leads people to start considering things like Champions and Aion.

I’d also like to know WHY old bugs have returned to the game.  I will not rest easy until Mythic posts something as to why they have returned and what they did to fix it.

ANSWERS! I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE THEM!

Oh, and I am really sick of having my game crash after every scenario.  Really sick of it.

MMO’s just got sexier?

August 22nd, 2009
... Zombie Lucy? It all makes sense now.

And here I thought MMO’s alone were sexy enough.  I mean, really.

Part of the reason I enjoy being in guilds is the sharing of information I would otherwise not find on my own.  My coauthor Xerb posted this music video on our guild forum this morning:

Do you want to date my avatar? WATCH IT.

If only all of the sprightly, shapely, deviously misproportioned avatars had THAT behind ‘em… unfortunately they are more likely to have … this.

Answers. I want answers!

During the PTS Battle Royal, the chatter on vent was unbearable.  I’m not entirely sure why I stayed in vent (our of the hopes I would get my own warm cuddly clipped wing griffon who’s eyes still show that hunger for flight… poor guy….) … anyhow- one person harped on and on about “version control” and how old bugs seem to reappear after each patch.

At first I thought the woman with a heavy British accent that claimed to live in a castle was just crazy.  Now… she was crazy right.

The “terror” debuff for healers is no longer in effect in fortress sieges, and fortress lords’ have had their leashes extended to what they previously were- allowing them to be kited to the second floor on rare occasions.  And a keep lord or two have become temporarily invulnerable.  When they made changes to ORvR, did they just grab an old archive segment of code and build off of that?

Or did they add Zombie Bugs with the implementation of LotD?  SHOOT THEM IN THE HEAD DAMN IT!

… anyhow, with the 1 year anniversary coming… and while they are rewarding my investment of ~$238 (including the cost of the Collectors Edition… *not* including the cost of guild webpage/vent) with some fancy pixels… I still find myself focusing on these glaring errors which truly effect playability.

I love Warhammer.  I love being able to walk around the universe.  C’mon Mythic!  Let’s see some 31337 Patching- nut this scrub stuff!

(edit: It also occurred to me that this is my 100th post… by god you all are gluttons for punishment- and bad blogging too.)

Now that’s love.

From the Warhammer Alliance Press Release: “Fans that have waged non-stop war for the past year will be rewarded with a special veteran’s reward, the WAR Aegis, and unique title, Weapon of WAR.”

I love shinnies.

You know what I want for the anniversary?  Not crashing, and scenarios that run all the time.

Let me put it to you this way: I clean my apartment over zerging ORvR.

… Something is wrong with that.  Very wrong.

Let me be amongst the first…

August 17th, 2009

To congratulate Dark Crag Destro on breaching Altdorf for the first time since January!  Let the accomplishment not be tarnished by the Trolls of the Warhammer Alliance Forums.

With 4 minutes left in the City Siege, 51% versus 91% VP in favor of Destruction.  And I was looking forward to being locked out :(  (No, seriously…)
